HOW TO CARVE AN APPLE INTO AN EDIBLE SWAN:

Prep time: 5-10 minutes

Author: Curry for the Soul

Recipe type: Fruit & vegetable carvings

Cuisine: Indian

Ingredients:

  • 1 fresh apple

  • 1 sharp kitchen knife

  • 2 butter knives

  • Lime juice for sprinkling on apple to prevent browning

Method:

  1. Place a fresh apple on the cutting board

  2. Cut off 1/3rd of the apple

  3. Remove the seeds and retain them for using later as Swan's eyes

  4. Place half the apple between 2 butter-knives to stop from cutting too deep

  5. Cut a wedge about the size of a quarter of the apple about 1/2" from the centre

  6. Cut a smaller wedge out of the one you just cut leaving about a quarter of an inch of the first wedge

  7. You need 3 wedges. If the apple is large, you can cut more wedges

  8. Continue the same process for the other side of the apple to create wings

  9. For the head, cut in front of the body and remove the piece to make a slot.

  10. Now assemble the wedges to create wings

  11. Take the other half of the apple. 3 cuts are needed, one 'v'cut to create the beak and the last cut to create the height of the neck

  12. Fix the apple seed where you visualise the eyes of the Swan

  13. Now insert the neck in the slot as shown in the picture

  14. Done. Beautiful centrepiece is created for your party dinner table.
